on my wifes 850 there is a sound from the fuelpump, quite high i think, and i starts running as soon as i put the key i pos II and keep on doing that. On my other cars, ( Dodge, and Ford ) the pump will stays on for about 3 sec, and then cut off, and start again when the engine starts, should it be that way in volvo cars also? The Volvo can be very hard to start when its hot, i have changes, everyting exept fuelpump and realy,

Any suggestions?

I have a 97 850. I've had 2 brand new batteries in the past few months - one in November, one 2 weeks ago because the other died. Had diagnostics done and everything checked out fine, including the alternator. There's a 0.4 amp draw on the battery, well below specs. I've been turning off radio and all lights while parking, and have been driving it every day. Yet, the battery isn't holding up.
Any ideas?

I've been getting a rough start-up, poor gas mileage, and less than stellar performance on my 96 850 GLT. Basically, I'm convinced it's the oxygen sensors since after my last repair and reset of the check engine light. After 50 miles, the light went on again, and am going to replace them, and I am worried about damaging the catalytic converter.
So...the question is - how difficult are the sensors to replace? I know there are front and rear sensors (which will run about $200 I'm noticing), around the catalytic converter. I have unfortunately misplaced my Haynes manual, so I'm summoning your help. I want my car back!

Is the drive belt tensioner found on the serpentine belt?

Is the serpentine belt the same as the auxiliaries drive belt?

Or is it the same as the Timing belt?

Why all these questions??? I, a non-mechanic, am trying to figure out what WAS replaced and what I NEED to replace based on maintenance records and recommendations.

I am seriously considering buying a used 1995 850 T5R. The car is a genuine T5R with the sedan body. The mileage is 173,597 km (approx 108k miles). The car was traded in to a non-Volvo dealer and has an asking price of just under $4k USD. It seems to be in really good shape - it has the factory body kit, 17" alloys, and all of the options.

I've never owned either an 850 or a turbo Volvo before. Are there any weak-points that I need to be aware of? Does the higher power output cause excessive engine wear or problems with the drive-train?

Finally - is this a reasonable price for a T5R with this level of mileage?

my protective rubbers around my back shocks are all ripped does any one know if u can get new ones.also does any one know if i left them off would my car fail its mot.stuart

had my engine tested error fault came up code 121 maf and map sensor something to do with air intake quote me if im wrong.if a fault can these be sorted out on computer etc???.or do they need to be replaced.are they expensive.none turbo.

I've just noticed over the past two days puddles of water. There seems to be a constant drip of water coming from bracket and/or line on the bottom of the car, center at the front. Is this from the A/C???

Help! I lowered my rear seats to haul something, and when I put the seat backs up, the left rear single seat would not raise all the way, the seat belt had jammed. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Saturday morning topped off Oil, it need two quarts. Then Sunday night my son calls and says the oil light it on, adn he saw some oil on the ground.

I have a 1996 850 2.5l with 217,000 miles. It goes really well and has only broken down on me once in 7 years.

I have a dilemma on what to get fixed first!

There is a noise coming from either the gearbox or the driveshafts. The garage mechanic cannot determine which it is and recommends replacing the driveshafts and if it is still not fixed then sorting out the gearbox. A mechanically able friend thinks it is the gearbox making the noise as it is most noticeable in 1st and 2nd.

Do I follow the mechanic's advice and start with replacing the driveshafts, or go straight to sorting out the gearbox, which is a much bigger job? Anyone else had a similar problem?

This may sound dumb, however, is it beneficial or alright to put in premium gas in a 1993 850 GLT, when the specs say 'regular' or 'unleaded' fuel?

Hi,

Midway through replacing the timing belt on my 1997 850 Base. I have two questions that I hope someone can answer:

1. How far out should the timing belt tensioner shaft extend from the body? On the one I just removed the shaft only extends about 1/2" from the edge of the body, and part of that distance is taken up by a plastic collar. I am suspecting that this one is seized as that seems way too short, but would like someone to confirm whether or not that is true.

2. I am having real difficulty removing the timing belt at the botton of the engine due to almost non-existant clearance between the crankshaft gear and the block. There is a small projection that prevents the belt from slipping between the two, and despite my attempts I have been unable to remove it. They Haynes manual says this is tight and fiddly, but this seems ridiculous. I am thinking about removing the pulley, but would like to avoid that if possible. If anyone has any suggestions for this they will be much appreciated.

i have a slight oil leak in engine conpartment passenger side.about 11 inches in from front passenger side wheel.any ideas.thanx

I am just looking for new tires and was wondering which would be my max tire size I can place on my rims. I currently have P195/60/R15. Can I possible put a 205 or 215 on the rims?

Hi All,
I've got a fairly major oil leak that appears to be coming from the turbo, Oil is blowing out and totally covering the underside of the motor.I have cleaned the motor and put it on a hoist to look underneath. The oil appears to be coming from the turbo and not from any of the lines, it is not passing through the turbo into the motor as the car isn't blowing any smoke at all. I don't know alot about turbos, so any suggertions? The car has done about 100,000 kilometers. What is the life span of a turbo?
I have recently moved from Hong Kong back to Australia and shipped the car home.I now live out in the bush and my nearest dealer is about 200 miles away. and I don't really want to drive it with this leak .Any suggestions.

So my car is making a noise when the car moves up and down. Im guessing its suspension but its only on the left side when I press the car up and down. Any ideas what it could be or how I could get it to stop?

I am purchacing a 1994 855 turbo this comming saturday. I am quite pleased with my find, it's a family owned car, in good overall shape, and only major work it needs is a rear main seal. Anyway, i had a few questions about certain things on the car. First of all, the rear seat belts arn't working. They arn't pulling out and i havn't taken them apart to see if there is a problem that i can see. Would the seatbelt assembly itself need to be replaced? or could it just be a jam.

My next question is about the key fob. The car already has a remote, but it is a squarish one with the lock and unlock buttons. I have a more rounded square one with the 2 buttons on it that are positioned vertically and larger than the other remote and say Lock/panic and unlock. Can i program that second remote to work with the car or is it for newer 850's or other series cars only?

okay. I have a P reg 850 Estate. Last week it failed to start entirely. Battery dead. was recharged - started fine.

This morning - dead again. Thing is I can't even open the doors as the key remote won't work which means I don't know how to open the bonnet to recharge battery.

Sooo.....

1) How can I open the boot??

2) If the battery is not holding its charge ( new Volvo battery too) what might be the problem and how could I sort it??

I ahve experienced a problem twice when I tried to start the engine, the engine spin at normal speed but it seems to be there is not fuel or spark. There is no ckeck engine failure. After 15 or 20 sec it start normally, there is no failure code.
What can be starting to fail? I have made the 195.000 Km maintenance changing spark plug, fuel and air filter and a sensor that goes in the crankshaft side.
I know the question is to wide,but I would appreciate any idea to check something

I am looking to get a new car and someone found a 1997 850 GLT for around $5,000. It has only had two owners, lots of positive features, and apparently great upkeep.

The only thing is that it's got 99,213 mi. on it. I don't know much about volvos, but I was told by a former mechanic that it was still a good deal. I'm currently driving a dying heap of junk, and I'm really in no position to spend much more than their asking price.

Does anybody have an experience with this and know if it's a good deal?
Anyone know how long it will last me?

Hi everyone, I'm emily and i'm new here. I'm also new to owning a volvo 850 turbo wagon (it's actually my first car, i've had it for about two months). I've been lurking a little bit, reading, but in all actuality i don't know much about cars. This being the case i thought i'd just write and see if i can get some feedback because all of you seem to know a lot more than me!

Last friday my car started to lose power when making left hand turns (weird, i know) and simultaneously the tranmission shifter light (orange flashing arrow) and the check engine light came on. I turned the car around and went home, fearful that it would die when i was trying to make it through a light in rush hour traffic. Anyway, i assumed that it was a transmission problem. I checked the fluid, it def needs to be changed (mechanic confirmed that as well).

to see what codes the car was putting out i took it to the mechanic (whom i like and trust), left it there over night and he called me this morning. Apparently, someone clocked the car. It's a 94 and claims to have 99,000 miles on it. From the oil around the engine and just general dirtiness and wear and tear on the interior and wheels of the car (along with several leaks) the mechanic believes my car really has closer to 150,000-200,000 miles on it.

the leaks it has are the distributor "O" ring? the turbocharger, flametrap is clogged, and a cover plate on the transmission (trans fit cover plate?) i'm not sure.

he said i should go ahead with a trans fluid change (flush) and run it for a few weeks and see what happens.

and also, I think the O2 sensor needs to be replaced. It caused some problems a while ago, but hasn't made a peep since.

I guess my question is, is it a lost cause? I mean, should i even sink anymore money into this car or just give up? My inclination (because i really like the car) is to at least try, but he (the mechanic) said that a new transmission would cost me 3-4 thousand and i definitely don't have that kind of money right now. I only paid 4 thousand for the car so...

This is pretty terrible news for me, i really, really love my car, and if it can make it for just another two months or so i might be able to have the money to fix it, but at the same time i realize that sentimentality should not overwhelm the economic truth of the situation. It really is a great car though. well, thanks for any of your help guys! i hope that you all have a better time of it with your cars than i am!

My new-to-me 1996 850 5-speed has been stalling every so often at idle or when coasting. Sometimes it does it when cold, sometimes warm, sometimes the engine feels as though it's running a little rough under load.

Yesterday it stalled at a red light and took a few minutes to restart. It set the code PO103: "The PCM has determined that the mass air flow input is higher than expected for the current engine operating conditions."

I've tightened up the hoses in the vicinity of the MAF sensor and don't see any obvious leaks. What's my first step? Maybe just a cleaning of the MAF wires?

Also, is the MAF the same for standard as automatic? The parts catalogues seem to specify automatic, but I can't see why there would be difference.

i have aproblem with my 850 estate misfiring intermittently. its a 2.0 ltr 10v auto.
i have recently had new distributor head, rotor, plugs, leads, and air filter replaced, and still i have the misfiring. the car will occasionally drive for an hour or so with no problem, but then the misfiring returns. i'm pulling my hair out !!!
any ideas?.

hi am new here and this is my first post.
the other day my wipers and washers stayed on permanentley and i had to pull the fuse, any way fixed now with new relay thanks volvo (31quid).

but ever since i put it all back together everythings playing up. my outside temp display is saying LO.
i have checked for codes on fuel/ignition and trans and every time the vehicle speed sensor signal absent comes up.
also the sunroof has stopped working.
the car drives normal it seems until you kickdown it in sports then when you come to idle it ticks over at 200rpm then finaly stalls. the gear box mode selector switch ie. winter/econ/sport does not light up to tell you what mode your in nor does the up arrow come on the dash but they seem to work all right even 3rd and lock.

what the hell have i done

When normal driving, with no A/C no problem. When I turn on A/C an drive no problem.

When I have A/C on and traffic or idle, the A/C doesnt blow cold, and the temp. on the engine jumps up. I am a newbie so please be gentle

I have had nothing but problems with my 94 850 Turbo AC. I had the evaporator replace a few years ago which is a common problem with these cars. Shortly after the AC starting switching on and off very quickly. I gave up on the dealer and brought it to an indepedent shop. He said that their was debrie cloging the nozzle before the evaporator. He said that his brother owns a Volvo repair shop and he saw that problem once before and claimed it was from the condenser deteroriating. I will replace the condenser and or the compressor if that will fix the problem. I do not however want to keep bringing in into the shop and ring up 1000+ dollars in carges. It appears I can purchase a condenser for $125 and a compressor for less then $300.00. Does anyone have experience with this problem.

I've owned my 94' turbo for about 4 yrs know. I bought because I thought it was an awesome car for the price and intended on using it as a daily driver. However I have fallen in love with this vehicle and I am now intent on repainting it and updating my rims. I plan to keep this car longer , I was trying to find body kits on the net but all I found was Erubuni kits which only carry one style. Does any body know of a website or place of business that carries a larger selection? Any help and/or input will be appreciated.

I have had my 1994 Volvo 850Turbo for I would say almost 10 months now. I love this car it is a thing of beauty.
Anyways, I drive on road trips a lot and I listen to a lot of music when I am driving. My 850 came with pretty much all the added features. So it has the Alpine 6 disc changer thing in the trunk and so on. I love the disc changer but I hate not being able to put in a CD in the dashboard if I happen to not like what is in the disc changer.

ANYWAYS. To make a long boring story short. I want to know if anyone has any ideas on getting a CD player in the front dash and still use the changer in the back without huge changes?

Or if I must replace the entire front stereo, does anyone have any suggestions? Its an odd shape.

Great forum you have here. I was wondering if anyone can help me with a car I've been looking at. It's a 96 850R in immaculate condition, but it has a lot of miles - 205000 to be precise. Normally I wouldn't even consider this, but with the reputation of Volvos, and I've been looking for one of these for a long time...

hi: i have a 93 850 and sometimes the speedometer would stay at zero until the accelerates then it would move but then it would get stuck before it moves again.

Ive seen a few 850's with these head lamps , however they dont say where to find them. Needless to say , I WANT THEM , can any one tell me where I may purchase a set. thanks.

I just bought a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT and it was missing the owners manual. I tried to get it from www.volvocars.us but it linked to a 0kb file.

It's not really worth it to me to go and buy one somewhere, but if anybody knows where I could download a copy I'd really appreciate it.

I really need some advice from knowledgeable Volvo experts. Your help is appreciated.

I bought a 94 Volvo 850 Sedan about 3 months ago. I paid low blue book for it at the time, but still it was $3k. After buying I discovered some small problems, but they were things I could live with (some broken parts in the moonroof, some pesky weatherstripping that wants to fall out, a couple of compartments that don't want to open, etc.). But mechanically the car seemed awesome. I had it checked out by a mechanic and it got a good bill of health.

Since I have had it, it's run like a dream with no problems whatsoever. But last friday night I drove it home from work and parked it. Everything was fine. Then, Saturday evening I went out and started it up. Immediately, it was sounding very rough, and two lights on the dash were on (SRS & ABS). Also, the shift-lock was engaged and I couldn't put it in gear. I quickly discovered that I could use the shiftlock override to drop it into gear, but it still sounded very rough. Once in gear I cycled down to D, and when passing through N it made a horrible noise. Sort of a pitchy whine. I put it in reverse and went a few feet back. Then I put it in drive and went a few feet forward. Each time passing through N it made a terrible noise. I then shut the car off. A moment later I went to start it again and it wouldn't start. All the lights on the dash came on (which I understand is normal when attempting to start the car), but the spring action in the ignition was gone.

I had it towed to the shop (a mechanic I trust) and he looked at it and told me that the starter was gone. I asked about the transmission. He said there was no real way to check it without the car running and that he would have to fix the starter to tell me the story with the transmission. (Although the tranny fluid looked very dark and smelled somewhat burnt to me, when I check it.) So he wants $510 to fix the starter (by the way, he tried bypassing the ignition to start it and that's when he found the starter was dead). I am concerned because if I pay the $510 to fix the starter only to find out the tranny needs to be replaced, then I will incur another $1500+ for the tranny. (He said he could probably replace the tranny for $1500-2k if it needed replacing.) If this is the case, I would be putting another $2k into the car, and would have spent $5k on a $3k car. I can't really afford that, but obviously need a car, and don't have any good prospects for a decent car for $2k either.

So, I would like to know, has anyone seen problems similar to this with their Volvo (something corresponding to both the s
