Just wanted to introduce myself. I bought a 1988 240 DL wagon in Atlanta from Dyre and Dyre when it was new. The odometer stopped working about 4 years ago at 128,00 miles and the clutch and engine are original with no work done on either except the clutch cable broke a few months ago right where it attaches to the pedal.
Anyway, my son drives a 1991 240 DL we have had a couple of years. The overdrive blew fuses for a while and we had a relay, switch wire replaced and another time it was a fuse. Now it won't work at all - the OD.
The ignition switch isn't right because sometiimes the radio will not even play.

Thanks for being out there for us all. My 1st VOLVO a 1989 Wagon w/ the B230 motor. I wanted the safey benifit along with a reliable mechanical reputation an fuel economy, so I switched from years with Toyota to Volvo. My experience here will also determine weather a Volvo sedan would be the ultimate "safety mobile" for my soon to be driving teen ager! I want to look for a early 90's 4cyl Volvo sedan likely to have an air bag.
Q: Any idea what year air bags became a common addition to a non turbo model?
I previously posted my first technical question to the forum on a starting failure. The car is now at a reputable mechanic being diagnosed. Who wants to take a guess on the diagnosis? I will find out later today and post results for the record. Thanks again, James H. [COLOR=purple][B]

As per the advice of this website, I went to go clean my throttle body yesterday to solve my poor idling problems. In the process of doing this, I removed my charge pipes only to find an excess amount of oil pooled in them. The oil soakage goes all the way back to the turbo. I can only assume I have a seal leak in my turbo, which is distressing because I had it rebuilt about 1.5 years ago. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem, or has any cheaper fixes or diagnosing solutions. Thanks for your help in advance.

PS, cleaning the throttle body solved my idle problem, thanks.

I've been reading up on O2 sensors and their effects on fuel efficiency. I feel like my 240 isn't getting it's maximum Km per L of gas and was thinking that I could have a malfunctioning sensor.

My questions:

1) Is there a way to know if you're O2 sensor is malfunctioning?

2) If installing a new O2 sensor in my 1984 240 should I install a single wire or a three wire sensor?

I know that the three wire sensor makes the sensor effective more quickly - but it is also three times the price. Since my car is old I was hoping to just install a single wire O2 sensor.... will that work?

Hi,

I just bought a 1984 240 Sedan. It's a 2.1 L Canadian made car. When I filled up the tank today I divided my distance traveled with the amount of litres of gas consumed into a Km per L ratio.

Right now I'm getting 7.39 Km per L of gas. (about 17 MPG I think).

Is this what I should expect or is my old girl indulging a bit too much at the all you can drink gas buffet?


I'm looking forward to hearing other MPG or KPL statistics from people.

Can anyone tell me if there is a ground wire that goes from the starter to the chassis.

I just replaced the starter in the 240 and the old one didn't have one (not my car, a friends) that I can remember, however it was towed to my place and not running when it came in...

...no audible click of the solenoid upon arrival. Now there is an audible click but the starter wont turn...if I jump the terminals it spins but not with the key.

Hi everyone - this is my first post - but considering I've only owned a Volvo for a week I figure that it's a sign of many posts to come!!

I just bought a 2.1L 1984 240. She's got a little rust but I'm not trying to use her as a lady killer or anything. The price was great but I still don't have a lot of money to spend on a mechanics professional troubleshooting unless it is 100% required.

I've had her for a week so far. I've done the regular maintenance stuff like oil changing, fluid top up, engine cleaning, and new plugs. At first she would start right away but now she's getting more and more bitchy when I try to fire her up. It doesn't seem to be a "when cold... or when hot" thing. I know she’s fuel injected and make sure to avoid pumping the gas. Usually I just try turning her over and then wait a few seconds before trying again. Yesterday morning she wouldn't start at all and I had to get a jump because my battery ran out of juice. But then later on she was going fine again.

I'm looking for advice on other things to replace or check. I have the Volvo bible next to me but I need some guidance on where to go next. Personal experience would also be very helpful. I am in no means a mechanic but I am quite technically minded and enjoy repairing/fixing everything. Does anyone think this could be a distributor problem? Or is the fact that it's getting worse hint towards a fuel pump/pressure problem?

The ignition coil in may Volv works fine but can i upgrade it at all? What is the voltage it's puttin out any ideas?

I just became a member of the Volvo family. I have a 1984 240 that has some issues but overall is in pretty good shape. I'm interested to know how much on average people pay on upkeep. If you want to post how many Km / Miles you have and a little more maintenance information please feel free to do so.

Volvo's have been in the family for a long time and I just found a 86 240 (not sure if its a dl or gl) auto in decent shape with 150k miles on it asking $950 but im thinkin 650 thats the kinda guy I am
what do you guys think? Im wondering if this would be a baseline for a good DD with good slight moded handling and a few speed goodies, but is there another, more sought after volvo that I should go for? nothing 70's or anything but I heard about a 2dr turbo like the 240's cant remember the model.... but i remember likeing it a lot. I kinda dont like the auto trans but thats not too bad...
the car has ok paint(could use a colorsand job) with dented up front 1/4's(replace at least one) and needs misc trim all the way around.
what do you guys think should I jump on it? or hold out for somthing better? Im waiting to sell my 86 civic(pretty good car and not the dime a doz one u see everywhere) since i need something reliable.
I also have the option of getting a 87 mistu. starion for the same price but needs more work so im thinking: speed and sports look/ride or comfort and more work to make a sleeper also possible being more reliable

i no that some of the 240s didnt have back headrests and some times i sit in the back and theres nothing there to lay my head back so i was wondering if theres a way to put rear headrests on an 84 244? thanks

I just picked up a pretty decent '91 240 wagon and she seems to be the perfect daily driver/utility vehicle, but the darn thing stalls on a warm engine. Starts up fine cold, but then can't keep idle when warm, particularly when the tranny is in park. If I'm quick enough to get her into gear before it stalls, then she's fine until I turn her off and start her again. Is this a common problem and a quick/inexpensive fix? I already had a tune-up with fresh plugs, wires, etc. But that did not aleviate the problem and neither does injector cleaner. Any tips or suggestions? Would much appreciated. Thanks

yeah when i start my car and let it idle for a bit theres something thats rattling under my car i dont know if its my muffler or cat its really annoying. another thing is when i start my car the car moves forward a lil and stops and i didnt even switch gears yet.

Does anyone know of ne place i can get a front right fender liner? i cant seem to find one. if ne one has one off a parts car let me no.

I drive a 1984 Volvo 240GLM. On the topic of Ignition Coils ... how often does it need to be changed?? I recently changed mine as it was very old. Just by looking at it, I could tell that it was in my car for years!!
However, what are the signs that the coil needs to be changed?? Or is there a specific time in which to change it??

I just picked up a problem with a scrubbing noise that appears to be coming from my passenger rear tire. I took the tire off, looked at the pads, rotor, etc., and all seemed fine. I put the car in drive, (on jack stands of coarse), and it made the noise. I took off the caliper, rotor etc, put it in drive again, and no noise. I put everything back together again, and after 50 miles of driving, and parking overnight, it's back to making the noise again. Any ideas?

i'm new to the forums here (first post), and I am looking for the air meter assembly out of a 240 running any form of CIS.
there is a mod you can preform on volkswagens with CIS using the bottom half of that assembly and get (seriously) more than 10hp at the wheels!
if anyone has some parts... i have some cash.

What is the biggest wheel that you can fit on a 240 without doing ne modifications? Thanks

I have noticed on some 240s that have a S-Shaped tailpape which is what I have on my 84 and others ive seen have the L-Shaped Tailpipe. Could I change my S to the Lshaped tailpipe? Or would I have to do some modifications? thanks

I have minimal rust and a badly banged up left front quarter panel (with a slight amount of damage to the drivers door) I am looking for a trustworthy and experienced body shop that could do the work in the Los Angeles area.

I am NOT looking for a paint job, just want to remove the rust and replace the quarter panel and I have no time/skills for this kind of body work.

In the last two weeks by right front tire/suspension has been squeeking when I drive over bumps. I thought it was because of our cold weather, but it hasn't stopped, even when the weather hit 70 the other day. Any thoughts?

As I mentioned in a previous post I am a little bit apprehensive with the noise from my under floor pump & have recieved some very helpful tips from fellow members , but before I start tapering with any thing perhaps someone can tell me if the in tank pump has a seperate relay i.e. are there two petrol pump relays.

I drive a '89 240 with B230F engine (EZ116K/ LH-Jetronic 2.4), but as we speak, it's completely dead.

No spark coming from the coil. I've tried the diagnostic system, but it's dead. Pressing the button 2 seconds with ignition on gives no result at all. I've cleaned the contacts and measured them, everything is fine. Fuses providing power to the ECU's are fine, no corrosion there either.

Measuring at the coil, it will have +12V with ignition on. I've tried measuring the sensor at the bellhousing, it appears to be OK. The distributor does not have a sensor at all. Tried another ignition module - no difference.

I'm really puzzled now. Especially the thing about the diagnostic system not working. I can se a really dim glow in the diagnostic LED when I connect it to the connector #2 or #7, so I guess that verifies the connection is OK.

Any tips on troubleshooting this? I'm thinking about swapping the ECU's with known good ones, but they're not easy to find just to swap and try without buying..

my 245 makes an awful crunching noise when I go over bumps...our minds are boggled, as we cant seem to find the source...any info?

Is there a way that I can get a rubber antennae the ones that are the euro ones to fit on my 84 240? ive seen other 240s that have them on there but i cant seem to fit a rubber atennae on mine do u know how i could possibly fit one in there? i have the power atennae on there right now and would like to replace it thanks

ok my mechanic took out my k an n air filter that i bought and put in a regular air filter because he said that the oil from the k and n filter gets in to the air flow meter and its not good for my car. is this actually true?

[SIZE=7]Today is March 3 2005.... I'm currently attending Wyotech in fremont CA. Now I've been having this problem where the car wouldn't go into fourth gear, and how do i know? I can just feel it. So I go underneath the car and noticed that the solenoid on the transmission looks like it blew up so then on the same day i went to the junk yard and picked up another one. Went to school and installed it.. my teacher thought that it would actually work.. but then it didn't. the overdrive light even came on. Dyaam that fourth gear... now if anyone can help, i'd really appreciate it.... but for now im going to work on that overdrive light maybe its the fuse, switch, or bulb, i don't know. but thank you

It's brilliant of me finding such excellent site to join to the Volvo club. Here are a lot more members than I expect it would be.

I want to know why my 1990 240GLE catches sever cold in the next morning whenever I park it outside in the raining night. The Engine won't stop caughing unit the temperature rises; it takes about 10 min.

Hope at least one of our fellow member gives me some advice.

hey! my 86 240 is pissing antifreeze at an alarming rate!! it seems to be leaking from the engine near the front. please tell me its NOT the water pump!!!

For the last couple of years, my '91 240 has had an intermittent problem with the power windows - all power windows will stop working. The fuse for the power windows is fine. For some reason, by hitting the passenger side of the center console, the problem will often go away (like hitting an old tv to get it working). This 'solution' is not working well anymore.

Has anyone ever had this problem? Is there a connection behind the center console that I should check?

Hi Friends! I'm completely new to a "forum" site, and its usage. I'm thankful for having such an opportunity as this. OUR PROBLEM: we have an 87 240DL. Have had very little problem with it for 10years. It is now stalling out when idling at stoplights (with transmission in D) and/or when beginning to accelerate when pulling away.
Could be vacuum problem I suppose. Might any of you friends have a suggestion?
