Evaluating the Effectiveness of Child Safety Seats and Seat Belts in Protecting Children from Injury

Young children are required to use child safety seats, and the age threshold at which children can legally graduate to seat belts has steadily increased. This paper tests the relative effectiveness of child safety seats, lap-and-shoulder seat belts, and lap belts in preventing injuries among motor vehicle passengers aged 2-6. We analyze three large, representative samples of crashes reported to police, as well as linked hospital data. We find no apparent difference in the two most serious injury categories for children in child safety seats versus lap-and-shoulder belts. Child safety seats provide a statistically significant 25% reduction in the least serious injury category. Lap belts are somewhat less effective than the two other types of restraints, but far superior to riding unrestrained.

Ther is a performance chip for sale on ebay making great claims.... seams to good to be true, anyone out there had experience.

Based on info that I have seen posted on the internet I purchased Volvo brand spark plugs for my recently acquired 850. I read that Volvo's are temperamental and seem to do best with either Volvo brand or NGK iridium plugs. Is there any truth to this? What spark plugs do you use?

I am thinking of buying a volvo Bi fuel used car, so one that has LPG build in as it came from the assembly line.
But I wonder, is there an advantage opposed to aftwards build in systems ?
What I can think of is that aftwards build in has 2 ECU's one for normal petrol, one for LPG, where the LPG ECU tries to imitate normal petrol behaviour to the standard system. But does a Bi Fuel does have only one ECU, or is Bi Fuel actually the same as afterwards build in with 2 ECU's ? I would prefer one system controlling the engine, that knows when LPG or normal fuel is being burned. In my old car the LPG was build in afterward, but that is also the cause of much problems, like cables that are cut to intercept the signals, the engine warning control light that has 2 ECU's to react to, the lambda sensor that has to be disengaged and the signal imitated to fool the normal ECU, etc. Therefore my preference toward Bi-Fuel factory made.
Does anyone know the technical details of a bi fuel ?

Sorry for the dumb question, I'm no car pro, but would like to boost up some more power. Is it possible (whether or not it's dumb) to easily swap out a low for a high pressure turbo? If so, how costly would you expect it to be, and how labor intensive, etc...? Thanks!

I wanna convert my Auto 1986 740 gl into a manual from an auto. But i would rather not show up to a mechanic with a complete lack of knowledge of what type/brand/size of gearbox etc i would need. whether or not id need to mod other things (tailshaft, diff). im a bit blind on this subject and a bit of an explanation as to what id need, maybe a guess at a price would be very helpfull!

finally going for the ecu remap so if all goes well next weekend i should have some nice stats to put up. got beaten by a minivan (ok a new turbo vxr opel Zafira but still a minivan) because of the flat spot in first so it spurred me into action!

I own a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT Non-Turbo, and I am trying to see what it would cost and the amount of work involved in converting it to a turbo. I have no idea all the parts I would need to find, so hoping someone here will know. Thank you for any help.

Hello,

I just installed Bosch Platinum +2 spark plugs in my 1996 Volvo 960. After installation I turned on the engine and it has a rough idle. Soon the Check Engine light came on, so I turned the car off.
These plugs are what Auto Zone recommended that I purchase. I made sure to do each plug one at a time so that I didn't get the wiring mixed up. I tightened them with a torque wrench to 20 ft-lbs.

What can I do about the rough idle? I'm afraid to drive the car because I don't want to damage the engine. Should I just put the old plugs back in, or would that be a waste of time? Is it maybe running on only 5 cylinders?

I'll get to the point.
While overtaking, the turbo cut off abruptly, followed by very very strong 'turbo-smell' afterwards. Now it doesn't spool like it used to at higher rpm. I do notice small amounts of spooling at very very low revs but once the turbo gauge passes the half-way mark it cuts off again. Have yet to try again fearing I might make things worse to the engine.
I'm guessing somethings leaking/broken then?
Might be useful to know that I was driving on Sports mode at the time, for quite a distance.

i just bought a 1991 740 turbo wagon from my uncle, it was a VERY reasonable price. BUT the only problem is that it looses oil. but it looses it very fast, it will have the same amount of oil for hundreds of kilometers, then randomly loose about 2 liters, and it is checked very regularly. there is no where where it is leaking, and it never has any sort of blue smoke. does anyone know what this could be?

I know my fair share about turbo's how they work, why and how they go together etc...

I have also conquered the very large grey line of confusion that most have bewtween wastegate and CBV/BOV/DV etc... and they're different functions.

What my question is - i plan to purchase an electronic boost controller for my 93 940 turbo (saloon/sedan) and i think i have a td04-13h unit attached with built in wastegate and i was wondering what pressure can this turbo unit provide and can safely waste back into the exhaust with the size of the gate?

oh and i do plan to purchase a 2 nicer turbo's for this car and get a custom mainfold header and all that jazz ... halfway there too. found all the people that can do it, just need to find some turbo's

Now my trouble is where does the line from the BOV go?..to what vaccum. i have a 1993 volvo 940turbo wagon. help please!!!

since i' swapping the busted 1.8 for a low mileage same spec one as soon as i can afford it i was wondering what to do to improve it while it's out the car and easier to work on.
i've already got wider wheels and i'm fitting racing discs and pads for stopping power. not going overboard though. also planning a 2.5" or 3" sports cat and wide bore throttle body to go with the viper induction. planning to remap the ecu too. already have a stronger clutch. i know the 1.8 block is the same as the 2ltr so a turbo with down pipe can be fitted. if i put in a stronger head gasket and lowered the boost pressure would it help or just make a nice looking mess? i'm not aiming for super fast, just a bit more ooomph. not looking for over 180bhp as that means changing a lot of stuff.

I also have a K&N air filter.
I'd like to know how much boost can the engine safely take?
Is around 12-13 safe?

love it on here. loads of people with loads of stories. i'm wondering nosing around sites looking for the big end bearings on my s40 and i see loads of various bolt on bits to go faater, louder or smoother. make me think what does and doesn't work. what's the best for getting the perfect power band, or exhaust note, or most confident handling. so please say what worked and what didn't. at least i won't make the same mistakes.

Well it's like this.. I've been thinking of installing a bov in my v40 t4, but my mechanic says that it would interfere with the air flow sensor since the airflow would change and that it may cause engine to get weird. The people down at the shop where I was planning on buying say that the bov would have absolutely no impact on the sensor or the engine behaviour..

Now.. does the '98 v40 t4 have that mass airflow sensor or whatever it's called or not and will it cause problems unless i get a mod chip configured for the change aswell or something like that?

I'd really appreciate any comment and/or idea!!

I am looking for a transmission repair shop in southeast Michigan capable of servicing my 2001 C70 transmission (model AW50-55). Can anyone offer a suggestion? I found a place in New Jersey, but I have to remove the trans myself and ship it to them. They have the best price, but require the most hassle. Thanks for your help everybody!

thinking, since engine's are cheap, about dropping a t4 engine into my s40. what's the power of the t4 and is it the same mounts etc? think it is the same block, just bored out more. wanting to make the car more powerfull since the insurance is cheap now i'm 25.

Have a 1995 Volvo 850 GLT. My power steering is leaking. I had the rack and pinion replaced in 1999, but my mechanic says it needs to be replaced again. Can't afford it right now. But am confused about what I should use to fill power steering reservoir. Power steering fluid? Transmission fluid? (my mechanic says he uses Dexron 2 Transmission Fluid). My owner's manual specs "ATF." What the heck is ATF? Thanks!

I`m new at this forum.. and I drive a 1996 S40 1,8 liter.. but I got a question to you all.. how can I tune my car to get something about 300-450 horsepower... the S40 is stock so far..but I want some more power... thought about a touring car setup of the engine and suspention..but I havent got any luck of finding it..so please help me..I would be so glad if you can find something to me..
but another question...what is the best setup for a volvo..Turbo or supercharger?

Just had a new muffler put on and BSR PPC upgrade on my 01'c70 hpt the upgrade made a noticeable difference, don't know if it got me the 300hp like it said it would but i need more time behind the wheel to get some numbers. the muffler w/ tip sounds awesome. very low with a little rasp to it. nothing like the honda tuners with the fat cans. thought about the cat back exhaust but this saved a few hundred

Help, I am useless with technical data and am looking for some assitance. I have just bought an S80 D5 and am have seen that you can buy 'tuning chips' for these and other cars. Various manufacturers promise 20/30 % performance increase, reduced running costs, and the proces vary from £ 50 - £ 500.

Can anyone give me some advice on whether these things can actually work, and why the huge cost difference. Better still what products to buy if anyone has personal knowledge of them

Hi there!

I have a c70 LPT and i have removed the ECU so as to put a tuned chip. After the whole prosedure (desoldering the old chip, putting a socket in the board and placing the new chip) i have placed the ECU to the connector and the car didn't start. So i thought that something wrong is going with the new chip. I then unplagged the ECU, change the tuned chip with the stock chip and the car started. I let it warm up for a few minutes and i turn it off. Then i tryed again the tuning chip but the car denied to start. After a few trials i decided to go back again with the stock chip so as to have the car in a "working condition", but the car didn't start this time even with the stock chip. Has anyone a same experience with changing the chips? I have looked some fuses in case that were burned.Also i have to inform you that i have a volvo special tool to plug and unplug the ECU from the connector (in case that you think there is a bad connection in the ECU connector). What you suggest to do? If there was a problem in the tuned chip would it be a reason to damage some other electronic? How can i be sure that the ECU is in good working condition?

hi im looking for an lsd for my 240 sedan im in australia and to the best uf my knowledge they are all open centred diffs supplied here. doed any one supply aftermarket ls centers or did they come factory optioned internationaly to deal with the snow? or on performance models GT's? any info would be appreciated

I have been looking for a long time in upgrade my car with:

> better exhaust
> sport filter
> etc.

Aside from the fact that I'm not sure how much I want to get into this while the car is still under warranty I haven't found much information on how valuable these upgrades are.

I understand that a lot of wheel based upgrades (tires, brakes, suspensions, etc...) will help car sporting stability I still don't understand as much engine based upgrades.

For example does anyone know how engine tuning improves 0to60 timing performance?
My engine can deliver 218HP but what do you gain if you add 10hp (intake or exhaust upgrade)? What do you gain if you add 30HP (chip)? What do you gain if you upgrade all?

I suspect my car to do 0 to 60 in 7.1 sec if I push it hard. I don't think I've ever push it that hard. For that reason the benefit of upgrading will feel lesser on a daily basis.
So if after $2000 to $4000 of upgrade I gain let say 3/10 of a second (7.1 to 6.8sec) on 0to60 miles/hr time some how it doesn't quite feel worth it. I might as well wait for my next car purchase. At home we own two cars so I'm planning on buying a new car every 5years (10 years ownership on each car).

Doesn't anyone can bring light to my questions?
As anyone done some of these upgrades and felt a significant difference?
