What is OBD-II?

On-Board Diagnostic systems are in most cars and light trucks on the road today. During the '70s and early 1980's manufacturers started using electronic means to control engine functions and diagnose engine problems. This was primarily to meet EPA emission standards. Through the years on-board diagnostic systems have become more sophisticated. OBD-II, a new standard introduced in the mid-'90s, provides almost complete engine control and also monitors parts of the chassis, body and accessory devices, as well as the diagnostic control network of the car.

As i understood it, the Garage section HERE, in THIS forum, is NOT meant only for performance modifications. Instead its for ANYTHING different that you've done to your vehicle/s. (This forum is not even meant for pure performance reasons anyway...There are many others for that, on the Net...)

As such, dont be shy to update the entries there, no matter how small you think the addition is.

It's just a way to share with the rest of the world what you've done to your rides. That's all.

Just got a letter from Volvo NA stating that they are extending the warranty on the ETM to 10 years or 200K miles. They also state that I should schedule a software upgrade with the dealer and enclosed a letter you can mail in if you already have had the ETM repaired. Just thought I'd let everyone know.

P.S. I know this is not an introduction or new member, but I wanted to put it where the most people would see it, not in one of the model specific areas.

Things to checkout before buying a used car

In the case that a fully able mechanic could not assist you, then try the following guidelines:

1. Look at the underneath or under carriage at the engine section , watch carefully. If there is a wet oil trace from engine block to pan oil sump ... then avoid the car.

2. Check the engine oil level and conditions by drawing the dipstick oil . If you find that there is an oil sludge sticked to the dipstick between min-max indicating level, means that the car doesn't have a good maintenance practice.

3. Open the oil filler cap . Watch carefully (use flashlight) to the internal components, it should be clean from sludge . If heavy sludge present, then avoid the car.

4. Check the air conditioning system . Start the engine, then switch on the A/C, try to check all the position of A/C control switch - knob - button.

5. Check the steering systems . From stop condition, turn the steering wheel to the maximum right, then move the car. Same procedure to maximum left. If there sounds generated by this activity is rather too loud, then avoid the car. Also check the power-steering tank for leaks, especially at the bracer hose (the hose with the metal U-shaped hose) right in front and below the PS tank.

6. Check for any leakage of engine cooling system . Start the engine at idle speed up to the operating temperature. Open the hood and watch carefully for the leakage of the cooling systems. If you have bypassed the heater-core (a wise thing to do if you are in a HOT country and may never seem to have any real use for it), check the bypass hose. Typically, get a U-hose for the Volvo 940 model. Its actually for oil, but it would last many years if you use it for water/coolant like this.

7. Checking the worn out piston rings . Start the engine at idle speed for about 10 minutes. Try to get a person (or owner) to help you to increase the engine speed up to 4000 RPM while you stay at the back of the car, then release the pedal gas. Watch the gas color out from the tail pipe. If there is Black or Blue Smoke coming out , then avoid the car.

8. Test Driving .

a. Check the gear engagement first for all positions (P-R-N-D- etc etc). If takes longer time to engage, avoid the car.

b. Check the stall speed . Under full load, the stall speed is between 2500 to 3000 RPM.

c. Move the car gently to 60 km/h (20% Open Throttle). Then press the pedal gas to 50%, the gear shall be shifted-down from 4th to 3rd, continue to press the pedal gas to 90%, the gear shall be shifted down from 3rd to 2nd and the car continue to accelerate - and shift-up according to the transmission control unit program at 90% Open Throttle.

If everything OK then you may consider the car.

Hello guys.
Well, it's my friend. He wants to find a diagnotic tool for his 2007 volvo fm 400 8x4 tipper.
We searched for some, nexiq interface, x431 heavy duty, xtool ps2 heavy duty scanner(this one seems doesn't work in volvo), etc.
There should some others that we don't know.
We just can't recognize a better one among them...
So I wonder if we can get help here.
Hope it's not posted in the wrong place and there's someone can help.

I am a current dodge charger driver and am purchasing my first Volvo. Has anyone used global test drive to purchase a vehicle through? They offer cool rebates and am looking for feedback.

Yellowstone and Grand Tetons Epic drive and meet 2013

First item: I have gotten some flak from people on the different forms for putting this on as well as asking people to only post if they were going or at least seriously interested. I am not being paid to do this nor am I asking for money. I am doing this because I love to drive and seem to be one of the few people out in the community willing to take on such a headache. All I ask is if you are going to post on this thread, please be serious about attending. Just posting to say "say not for me" or "to far" makes the thread long and does not add value. Thank you.

Second item: There is no way I can please everyone for this event and nor am I trying to do so. I have done my best to make an event that balances the areas I felt were important.

Being able to see the sights you have not seen as well as take your ride on a drive you normally would never do.
Being able to drive the car in a fun manner at some points to “stretch its legs”.
Make a successful event that we can have move across North America to see the sights.

Dates of the event

June 24-28 – for meet and group activities. If you include driving to base camp it would be June 22nd – June 30th possibly depending on location you are starting from.

Base camp will be West Yellowstone. There is plenty of lodging, parking and activities for a hopefully big group. I will be working on group rates at the first of the year for everyone.

What will we be doing there?

We are in the oldest national park in the world so we will be seeing the sights and doing some walking around. In addition, a few others and I are trying to arrange some group photo shots at the parks attractions. I have included one day for just pure driving for those who are interested.

What will this cost me to go?

You will be responsible for fuel, lodging, food, park fees and anything else you might want to do. The only fee that is 100% for sure is the $25 for a 7 day pass which allows you to see both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons.

If I get enough people interested, I could have some removable decals made to be placed on the side of the car to be like we are on a rally event. If you want me to look into these costs, let me know on the form above.

This sounds LAME!

I know some of you have posted you hated Yellowstone and would just do the Grand Teton or you just want to hall **** around all day seeing what your car can do. Sorry this is not the place to do that. The best explanation I can say why this is not lame is because you are going on a ROAD TRIP, which to me has always been a reason to go to places. This also is a continental wide event that hopefully will be the first of many more to come. Therefore, if you still think this is a lame idea then I wish you a safe summer in your adventures.

Currently I have four cars from Sacramento area 100% going. In addition, I know of a few in Montana that will be attending. This means we have about eight cars ranging from BMW, Audi, Ferrari and Lotus already attending.

I figure this being the general all models page, this is a good general question: When should we consider an ECU "Computer" Reset... When and What Years and Models???

In the past on other makes I've done it when any computer connected part was changed or modified. Also, if there was a sudden difference in the way the car worked, both to see if it was a transient and to see if the codes could be duplicated and confirmed (if any existed). In each case I simply disconnected the NEGATIVE battery cable for 3-5 minutes.

Why? I'm working up a gift 1988 740 GLE (B230F Turbo) with troubles. However, I'm not sure this model even has a computer with memory capacity. My old 1980 240 certainly didn't. The 740 may just carry a fuel metering preset ECU that doesn't "learn" it's environment... or is it in truth a higher life form?

I would like to see a chart with all the Volvo models and ECU types ref'ed. Then I'd like to know when that type ECU should need to be reset and how to do it safely.

Somewhat related... is there somewhere we can send a suspect ECU to be tested by an honest and unbiased ECU shop? Some place that's not selling them? I'd say $25 would be a good price for the diag and printout report... about 10% of a typical replacement ECU is reasonable in my book, if I take it out and cover postage (or walk it in). An automated setup should be able to test 10-20 units an hour and I don't know of many shops that pass up that kind of cash if it can be done in batches.

This question is for anybody with experience towing with a Volvo. I have a small travel trailer with dry weight of 2500 pounds and tongue weight of 280 pounds. I'm looking for my next tow vehicle and thinking about an XC60 or XC70- both of which are said to tow up to 3300 pounds. The XC90 has a towing capacity of 5000lbs, but I have no use nor desire for 7 passenger seating, plus it gets lesser gas mileage. Plus I prefer the styling of the XC60 & XC70. Fully loaded (luggage, gear, water, etc) our camper comes in at just over 2800lbs. Plus we have a lot of hills to contend with. Would the XC60 or 70 be adequate? Or should I play it safe and get the XC90? It is just my wife and me- no other passengers.

I've got some 16 inch Volvo wheels that I'm not sure what model they come factory/aftermarket on. Could someone please help me here? The guy I bought them from said they came off of his V70 or C70, I can't quite remember.

So all US 2010 (2011 and 2012 too) Volvo models sold new come with Volvo's complimentary "Safe and Secure" complimentary maintenance service for 5yrs/60K miles. Right?

But I am having conflicting signals. Does this cover the first 8 scheduled maintenance events (up to 60,000) or only up to 30,000?

On a Volvo website it says "The maintenance program covers the first eight scheduled services at no charge. The service schedule is 7,500, 15,000, 22,500, 30,000, 37,500, 45,000, 52,500 and 60,000 miles.**"

but then it goes on to say,

**All model year 2010, model year 2011 and model year 2012 Volvos sold to retail customers include 7,500, 15,000, 22,500 and 30,000 mile scheduled services performed within four years from in service date at no charge.

Is the 5yr/60K Safe and Secure only an option? I believe I have this warranty program, but how do I know for sure?

I have a Volvo V50 fitted with the OEM Accessory; 'iphone/Radio connector' so I can play music from any Apple Device on the radio speakers. The connector also has a 2nd pigtail which is a standard USB female connector. I recently changed my phone to a Samsung Galaxy S3 which is fitted with a female micro USB; and is supplied with a micro USB to standard USB male connector. When I connect this to the 2nd pigtail in the car, it charges OK but I cannot get it to play the music held on the phone. Has anyone else had the same issue and if so how did you overcome it? I can get an Apple to micro USB converter on the internet but comments seem to suggest it only has the capacity to charge the Apple product and nothing else.

Our 2008 Volvo V70 has a seized main crankshaft bearing. The vehicle has been driven125,000 mostly on the highway. The bearing has turned in the aluminum block. The engine therefore has to be replaced. The vehicle is out of warranty! I understand this has happened before with this six cylinder engine. I wonder if this is a design fault.

I am searching for basic transportation and need some help so I, hopefully, don't make another costly investment with little return.

I need a vehicle that offers excellent visability and comfortable seats. The newer models of any vehicle have poor visibility and I need every inch a car can offer. I have a cervical fusion and so saftey and comfort are paramount.

I was familar with Mercedes, though I wasn't the one paying for repairs back in the 80's, and I bought a 93 300SE which did everything I needed a car to do. One tremendous drawback, it likes to visit the mechanic more than I do.

Currently, I have to make the decision to either do a fairly costly repair of the fan clutch, water pump and what ever else might be starting to malfunction (on top of all the other previous repairs) or start over with a different vehicle entirely.

Anyone have any recommendations for Volvos? Especially years/models to avoid/consider, for those to consider, check out x, y, and z as they tend to be common problem areas etc.

Most likely I will be looking at mid 90's models, mainly because of the better visibility offered in those designs. And yes, I do appreciate the fact I am looking at a vehicle that is 20 years old, but am not in need of a Kentucky Derby prospect, just a reliable bit of transportation to get me around a couple times a week.

Need to find where my fuel filter is on my 89 Volvo 780! anyone know, anyone?

First I wanted to say "Hi" to everyone and I hope someone might be able to provide some technical insight. I am brand new here to this forum and I have been trying to exhaust all efforts to find some help. I do not own a Volvo vehicle but I do own an '81 DeLorean with the stock PVR B28F engine.

Two months ago I removed the heads off of my engine to have a valve job done. During that process I discovered I had 1 piston cylinder that was slightly loose. Long story short, I decided it was best to just replace all of the cyl shims while I was there. I ordered my engine gasket kit form DeLorean Motor Company. Upon receiving my kit I discovered that I was missing 1 set of the shims. Those missing were the thickest, "Yellow" colored shims (approx .13mm - .16mm size). When I contacted DMC they indicated that they no longer had any left in stock and that they were not sure if, or when, they would be able to get them. Not wanting to wait around forever I decided to try and find the shim set myself. After some research What I found was that Volvo no longer refers to the B28 motor shims by color. Furthermore, they no longer offer 4 different shim sizes, but now only three. Those sizes are as follows: (.10mm .12mm & .15mm). The old Volvo shim part numbers have now been superseded by new part numbers. Also, these shims are no longer a paper type gasket but a metal type gasket.

My Question(s):
Since these newer shims are metal (I assume aluminum??) is the install just the same as the older paper ones? Or, would the metal shims benefit slightly if each side of the shim was lightly sprayed with say "Copper Coat - Spray Gasket" or the like, before install? Or, maybe the pressure from the head bolts in the final torque is enough to provide an adequate seal at the base of the cylinder liner?? If anyone has prior install information or advice on these I would love to hear about it! Thanks you for your time!

I am trying to replace a V50 engine, I have been offered 3 from different people, does anyone know how the engine age can be verified without any paperwork.

Is there some process of checking an engine number in the same way as a VIN ? or any even more hopeful way of tracing it to a specific car.

I was looking online for HID xenon lights for my car because it was like a $300 option or somethign crazy and my firend told me that I can get the HID xenon light for within $50. Kinda confusing. Does anyone know what's the difference and which ones I should get? Thanks.

I'm a first time Volvo owner, having recently purchased an elderly(ish) V40. Can anyone tell me if there are any Volvo friendly garages in Cornwall. I don't want to pay dealer prices unless I have to.

I am an HUGE Volvo fan. I am on my 3rd- first was a 1987 240 sedan, then 1998 V70 now I have a 2000 v70- Great cars! I never want to drive anything else... however this last car has about KILLED me in repair bills! I have found an AWESOME mechanic who helps me out and hooks me up with cheap/free parts and advice but there is ALWAYS something breaking! Last Christmas the Electronic Throttle Control went and had to be fixed by Volvo- they offered me a $900 trade in value AFTER giving me a bill for over $1100! I wanted to sell it before something else broke and costed me a ton of money, put it on craigslist and that weekend the timing belt went- thank god did not slip off completely!!the list goes on and on! In the 5.5 years I have had it, I have put an average of $2000 into repairs every year- sometimes alot more! My grandparents bought it new and kept it in pristine condition and even though i take care of it with the same amount of care and attention, it has just been falling apart

so Heres my problem: I am afraid of getting any other car than Volvo because of safety for my growing family- money IS an issue so I cant buy the newest safest cars- so Im trying to decide whether to buy an old Volvo( late 80's- early 90's) or something newer with cheaper parts? Any advice?? I would like opinions on whether I should stick with Volvo or not and also which year and model(must be a wagon) are best? also what to look out for with the older models!

It fails to start because it cannot find IE v5. I guess v8 is too advanced for it.

What do I have to do to get around this?

Volvo's CEO Stefan Jacoby is calling for a new focus for Volvo, and wants to see the Swedish automaker abandon its position as a premium brand meant to compete with Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

"Let's ditch this talk about premium," said Jacoby while speaking to Autocar magazine. "It sounds like a pricing strategy and it's got an expensive ring to it. We need to focus on elegant Scandinavian simplicity, our own unique identity, and not copy our competitors."

For years, Volvo has enjoyed its own cachet, particularly in the United States, where it became synonymous with upper-middle-class suburbia, but sales have fallen to the point where Jacboy is alarmed.

"We have lost ground in the US," explained the Volvo chief exec. "We are at the bottom, looking up."

I own a '01 V70 T5. I have an awesome mechanic at my disposal. I may move to North Dakota where there isn't even a Volvo dealership in the entire state!

I'm wondering about parts availability. Or, if a general mechanic be able to properly service my vehicle?

What do you think, should I take my car or sell it?

Our 2011 Volvo XC60 had a Pirelli tire sidewall issue (big bubble) after 13,000 miles. In taking in to the local Pirelli dealer as warranty requires, they said they will only replace with a new one if we replace all the tires. Reason is slight treadwear difference between the existing and new would cause transfer case issues. The existing tires have ALOT of tread on them yet. They said we had to deal with Volvo on the other three. I have contacted Volvo Customer Care and they are following up. Anyone else have similar issue? What tires are recommended given the bad experience with the Pirelli brand. I think it is ridiculous I have to possibly incur any costs after 13,000 miles and put on new tires for a $45,000 car!

Hi Guys, I'm new on here but I've just taken delivery of a MY12 V70 D5 which is equipped with, among other gadgets, BLIS. As you may know the centre console in the MY12 cars is totally different and this combined with the fact that I have never had BLIS before is causing me some confusion. So, how do I fully disable BLIS from the "My Car" menu? Currently it seems I can turn it off from either the button (which is obvious) or via the settings in the centre console display. Either way, when I restart the car next journey BLIS automatically comes back on. How do I get it to stay off?

It looks like a promising scanner, and I was just curious a little more about the coding/programming portion of the scanner.
I am afraid it can not do coding,it is only do diagnose.It has lots of adaptor which used on different car model.
Also What I want to know is whether this tool can read ABS or not.
Something else I know about it is just that it can do ecu programming.
Now does anyone knows it more?Add function about it.

I am shortly about to move house, which means my daily commute will be probably 150 miles per day (don't ask, long story).

Winter is coming, I live in Northern Scotland, so snow will be an issue soon, particularly as part of the commute will be dual-carriageway then cross-country.

My factors:

- Need economic engine
- 4WD ... or 2WD with winter tyres?
- comfort
- Need high-speed cruising (with comfort and economy)
- Prefer larger car (eg estate) to carry bike in the back.

I'm definitely going for the D5 engine as the best balance of speed/economy, and my preferred choices are:

XC70

XC60

S70

I've been offered a brand-new S70 (215bhp) for £26k (but don't like the colour) - or one of the bigger ones at list price less whatever discount I can negotiate.

I just cannot make up my mind.... help!!!!
