Just wondering if drilling the hole in the bottom of the headlight would be a viable option for installing Xenon's....

Like a lot of the country, we've had an extended period of heavy rain this spring. My '05 XC90 is parked outside, and frequently after a rainstorm I open the driver's door only to have a large quantity of water - a pint or so - pour out from the doorsill area. It's happened repeatedly and is occasionally seen on the front passenger door, but never on the two rears. There are droplets and moisture all over the silver sill inlay when this happens, which seems like it should be inside the seal (but I'm not sure...)

It does not seem right to me that so much water should be trapped against the lower door. The seals all appear to be fine and the car is parked on a normal manner, level from side to side with about a 5 degree rearward tilt. I was just in for routine service and asked the dealer to look at the problem. The report was that the seals were working properly and - get this - there were no codes from the drainage system.

Does the car have a "drainage system" that's monitored by the ECU? Seems very unlikely - is this just dealerese for "no problem found"?

Anyone else experience this? Any suggestions for fixing it or getting the dealer to fix it? We're headed into a hot dry summer (with any luck) and it won't be an issue again for months, but I'd like to not get wet feet the next time there's a rainstorm and I forget to stand back while opening the door...

I am so happy I found this site. It is great to be able to compare notes with other Volvo XC90 owners. Overall I have been satisfied with my Volvo and my previous problems have been more related to my dealer but that is a whole different story.

The question I have now is about a noise in the steering wheel. We recently moved to Maryland where the state inspections are pretty strict. My 2004 XC90 failed inspection because the inspector said that he heard a noise in the steering that I needed to have checked out. I immediately brought it to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong and that it was a normal sound for that model. Upon bringing it back to the inspector he failed it again insisting there is an issue. Brought it back to the dealer and they are insisting there is not an issue.

Has anyone had this problem? I dont know who to believe! I bought the Volvo because safety was one of my primary concerns and I don't like feeling unsafe in my car.

Hi, I've noticed in the last week or so during the cold weather (1-3 degrees C) that the heating system may have a fault, I have noticed the following:

1) You only get luke warm air out of the vents when the heating controls are set to full (Red) and the rear vents (B Post) just blow cold air.

2) Its takes a long time for the engine to warm up (nearly 15 miles of motorway driving)

3) When the engine is up to temp and you put the blowers on, the engine loses temp (50% reduction on the temp gauage) and the engine does not return to its normal temp levels until you have driven several miles after turning off the heating.

Any ideas, please?

I have a MY06 XC90, new to the forum and have a question.

Has anyone been able to (or knows how to) connect an external video input to a factory NAV head unit in an XC90?

I have seen it done on other models, but not the XC90. I would be keen to do it, would love to be able to add a video source like a DVD or even parking camera's to display on the Sat NAV head unit in my car.


Anyone have any ideas??

I'm considering swapping the standard, 6-CD changer factory stereo currently installed in my vehicle for the premium, Dolby PLII factory stereo. Is this a plug-and-play swap or does it require re-wiring, re-programming, etc? Thanks.

It's my wife's daily driver and I took it out for a ride yesterday. Heard a tick, tick, tick noise outside until the car warmed up. She said it always happens (thanks for telling me!) and that it happened last winter when cold.

Some more details:
- goes away within 3-5 minutes
- revving the engine in neutral/park doesn't make the noise
- makes the noise when accelerating
- take the foot off the guess when in drive and it stops
- can't tell if it's rpm dependent, engine drowns out the noise at higher rpm's

Any guesses?

Anyone have any info or experience with the 2003 XC90 T6 which has had it's transmission replaced?

The dealer claims that the new transmission came from the factory new and was not refurbished. It was replaced earlier this year (2007), but my concern is if they just put the same model (manufacture) as the previous one. Or are the new transmission that they are using to replace the old ones better and more reliable?

I bought my XC90 2 years ago in the USA and just went back to europe with the car.
now my speedometer shows both - miles and kilometers.
but in the digital readings on the odometer there is only miles stated.
how can I change this?
the service guy here tells me, that I need to invest appx. 450 EURO's for such a change/update.

I cannot believe and think, that this is only a reset or button combination (this was the fact with my second car).

who can help?
any canadian's who had to change this?

also my FM radio only let's me jump every other digit. e.g. 88.1, then 88.3, 88.5 and so on.
how can I go to even no's?

BTW: next week I will get the european navigation DVD's. I hope that there is not the next problem appearing...

When I took my 2006 xc90 in for its 15k servicing, I was told that Volvo no longer covers this for the 06 and later models. Has anyone else had this problem? The car is leased so I don't feel like I should be paying to service their car....

Other than that no complaints love the car.

Have a 06 XC90 V8 with about 8000 miles. Had my dad take it in for an oil change this morning and to check on some vibration/noise issues. Checked the fluids before taking it in - power steering fluid was WAY low almost to the tip of the stick. Ok, got a call late this morning and my dad said the dealer charged for the check/fluid top off - something like 28 dollars.

Question - isn't this supposed to be covered underneath warranty as a potential leak since steering fluid shouldn't just vanish - esp after 8000 miles?

My daughter owns the XC90 (2005) and with Christmas just around the corner I was considering a remote car starter for those cold, icy, blustery start-ups. I contacted a local (presumably competent) installer and was told that due to the tricky nature of Volvo electronics the installation of an after-market remote car starter was possible, but not recommended as it could damage the internal electronics of the Volvo............Any input????

I ordered the 16 inch "preferred winter tire and wheel package" from Tirerack for my 2006 XC90 T5 AWD. I do not have TPMS. The wheels won't fit over the brakes, however, when I try to mount them on the front of the vehicle. Anyone else have this problem? I have ordered from Tirerack in the past and will again but I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem, given that the Tirerack site says they should fit.

I'd like to know if someone experienced a right drift when you take off your hand from the steering wheel. This happens to mee all the time even on a flat road.
Problem observed even after a wheel alighment and with tire pressue the same on all wheels.

The DVD player in my 2006 XC90 is suddenly asking for a password. We never set it up with a password and right now we can't play any DVDs back there. Any suggestions?

I got my S40 brand new in July 07 and at about 6000 miles the cigarette outlets stopped working. I took it in to the dealer and they said the fuses needed to be replaced so they did that but the outlets still did not work...when I called them back they said it is probably because I use them to charge my phone and the charger may be too strong. I was using one outlet to power my sirius radio and sometimes would use the other to charge my cell phone or laptop.

I tried replacing the fuses several times and even tried a higher voltage but they blow instantly when I turn on my car and plug in the sirius radio or the phone charger. I called again and they told me that this just happens a lot and pretty much gave me no hope...

I took the car in to the dealership and they messed with it a few hours and came back and told me it was wokring now but when I got in and tried the sirius radio, it didn't work...fuses still blown! I am hoping there is a better answer than "just don't use the outlets to charge your phone, listen to sirius, listen to your ipod, etc" Those are the only uses I have for the outlets anyways! Anyone else have this problem? They told me it is common yet I haven't found a strand on this yet...

looking into an 05 xc90. is there a hard wire solution for adding an ipod interface to the existing stereo? i have found several outdated posts that say it is not possible but hope one has been found.

I am in Canada and have a 04 XC 90 T6 AWD. Has anyone had a block heater installed? Circulatory heater? Aftermarket? My dealer will install circulatory for about $ 400. Seems crazy to me!! Any ideas?

My Stereo LCD on the XC90 stopped working. It is completly dark but stereo works fine, the LCD stopped working about a month ago, I checked all fuses and they were OK. Volvo dealer wanted $900.00 to replace the entire stereo.
Can I send the LCD for repair somewhere else?
Is there a trick to getting this fixed?

I purchased a new 2007 XC90 V8 and recently posted a message regarding a "buzzing" noise coming from the engine. Based on some recent research, I believe the noise is associated with the start inhibitor module? The noise begins when I insert the key into the ignition and seems to continue for a few minutes even if the key is removed from the ignition. Is this normal?

I have a new 2007 XC90 V8 and noticed a strange Engine Noise when the vehicle was turned off. I opened the hoot and noticed that the noise was coming from the engine. The noise sounds like electronic and not a fan. Specifically, the noise was coming from the value cover area?

My wife backed out of our Garage poorly in her 2007 Volvo XC90 and I am looking for the entire assembly for the drivers side mirror. Its to bad because all that broke was the clear turning signal light on the side, not the painted casing on the back of the mirror or the mirror itself but Volvo told me that the whole thing needs to be replaced. Any ideas other then the dealership who wants to charge me $600. Thanks

I have a 2007 XC90. During the hot months, the radiator fan will run while idling - as I guess it should - but it is extremely loud. Is it just me or should't a higher end car be a bit more quite??

I have a 04 XC-90 with almost 80,000 miles. Recently the car began to smell like it had a gas leak. Upon further investigation the dealer discovered that the fuel pump mount on the top of the gas tank had cranked. No way should the metal have failed after only three years and since it is on top of the gas tank nothing could have hit it. Has anyone else seen this problem?

I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I have a 03 XC90 T6 and it just had the 30,000 mile service done and I was told after the service that I need to replace all 4 tires because they are almost worn out. I live in PA, Philly area and drive mostly local, but under normal driving condition. So, I just wonder when everyone else had their first tire replacements. Personally, I feel like these Michelin tires should last longer than 30K, probably into 40K or 50K. Also, I had my front brake pads replaced at 25K mile, is this also too low?

Greetings- I am hoping someone can help with a recommendation for Tires on the 2005 XC90 T6 AWD. The Pirelli's (scoprion) that came factory are already thin at only 28,000. I do live in the city and understand that wears a bit tougher but still think that's much too soon. Can someone recommend a good replacement. Looking for quality tires to replace all 4 as soon as possible . These are 17" inch wheels and must be all season to handle the snow in the midwest. ANy assistance would be incredibly appreciated-

I've not seen this in a search, so here's my Q: We bought a 16' canoe and load it up on the XC90 cargo racks, but as I thought they might, the vynil straps tying to the front of the canoe rub on the quarter panel paint. I need some advice on what material to use between the paint and the straps to keep from fouling my nice, deep red paint! If there were a better way to tie it down to the front, it might take the straps off the paint and on to the protective cover I have. The XC90 doesn't seem to have many options for tie downs in the front.

Anyone have experience or a good idea?

My XC90's left rear wheel bearing went out in the spring (really loud noise, vibration). Well, come fall, the right rear sounds like it's going out too!

The dealer and local mechanic both want about $400 to do the job. The part's about $200 alone.

How hard is it to change the bearing out? I'm pretty mechanically inclined and was a motorcycle mechanic quite a few years ago, but I have no heavy equipment that might be needed.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Without volvo service dept. hours from Friday evening to monday morning, was hoping you all may have a diagnosis for us.

Mom's xc90 does not have xenons.

While driving, the high beams acted as though they were on a timer & shut-off. Mom was able to turn them back on, but after a short time they would again go to low beam, on their own.

Simultaneously, the center console lights would blink. Just a few times, on & off & back on again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, all.

I just purchased a Volvo XC90 T6 2.9L today and drove it about 240 miles. After arriving at my home, I found a few drops of oil on the concrete. The underside of the car is fairly sprayed with motor oil.

It is very hard to tell where it is coming from, but it looks to be coming from the engine slightly in front of the right axel. Is there any common issues that may cause this?

Further examination revealed that someone had hacked away at the engine. I am basing this assumption on two missing bolts on the plate on top of the turbos, and other misc missing bolts. Also, out of curiousity, is the skid plate optional, or did I miss out there as well.

Other than that, vehicle is great. Car fax shows regular service on first owner and nothing on the second owner (a little over a year). Great ride, I'm just concerned about what could be causing this leak.

Are these typically good and reliable cars? Have I got a lemon? Any insight is greatly appreciated.

How's the maintenance cost?

I'm used to do the fluid (oil, transmission) change myself, will I be able to do that with the CX90? Since I heard a lot of German won't allow you to have the freedom.

My 2003 XC90 (75K mi) seems to have a problem with rear toe-in alignment. I get the alignment done, by the dealer, every 6 months (when I change wheels/tires from summer to winter). In the past 18mo., I've worn out three pairs of tires (two summer, one winter) on the rear axle, all worn on the outermost edge. When the alignment is done, the dealer has confirmed each time that the toe-in alignment was off...again.

While I've had the same wheel bearing, etc. issues that others have mentioned in this forum, this alignment problem is new. It's just shown up in the past 18mo.

I've seen lots of commentary on assorted forums (including this one) about tire wear, but haven't ever seen anyone comment about whether this wear is induced by alignment problems.

I have an '04 with the 2.5 liter that in the last 6 months I have had the same issue come up 3 times. I would shut off the engine and go to start it a few minutes later and it would crank but not start. Finally it would start and the dash indicator would read "reduced engine performance" and go off after a few moments. This only happens once in a great while and other than that, the car runs perfect. Any ideas? Mark-

I have poor reception in my premier system. When on Dolby the front speakers work only with some bass in the back with no station/song information during poor reception which is alot of the time compared to other radios. When the reception get better the information is listed and the rear speakers work again. This only happens in Dolby. I live in a area that the reception shouln't be, and hasn't been, a issue. I did a search and only found that someone found a bad connection under the seat. Any thing else out there? .
